Webinar on Mental Health for All
World Mental Health Day is observed on 10th October, to create an awareness on Mental Health, to remove the stigma on Mental Health, to seek help from Mental health professionals at the earliest to lead a happy and peaceful life.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) “Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”.
COVID 19 has affected a larger number of people all over the world. It has created a major stress in people and is evident that the people in the community are largely affected. Many people lost their jobs during COVID 19. Daily wage earners have been affected a lot and they lost their livelihood. Due to this many suicides have taken place in the society. COVID 19 has affected the student community too. Due to the stress many students have committed suicide. It is very important to educate the community as to, how to deal with and handle stress during the times of crisis.
The theme for World Mental Health Day 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO) is “Mental Health for All”. Based on the theme the World Mental Health Day was observed in our college on 10th October, 2020 between 1.15 pm – 2.15 pm via MS Teams the Online Platform.
Poster-making, Slogan writing, Blog writing and Short film making events were conducted on the theme. There was an active participation from the students. The students participated in all the events enthusiastically.
The program started with a Prayer Song followed by Principal’s Welcome Address.
Dr Annie Jacob, Director, KCG College of Technology addressed the audience on Mental Health and how to take care of Mental Health. Also she insisted that the body, mind and spirit must be aligned for perfect mental health.
Dr Yamini Kannappan, MBBS, DPM, DNB, Consultant Psychiatrist, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, the Chief Guest for the Day spoke on Students’ Mental Health and raised an awareness amongst students and staff. She educated our students on how to cope with stressors in life and suicide is not the only solution for problems in life and to practise resilience. She also spoke about substance abuse and handling emotions. Her message to the students was “It’s Okay to be Not Okay”.
Prize winning Short films were screened. The prize winners for the events conducted were announced. Cash prize and e-certficates were distributed to the winners of the first 3 places.
The program came to an end with Vote of Thanks by the Student Counsellor.
