About the Department

With Tesla creating futuristic cars and autonomous vehicles becoming a near reality, it is undeniable that the automobile industry is growing in leaps and bounds. The increasing concern for pollution-free and fuel-efficient vehicles is driving the need for well qualified engineers in the Automobile Industry to spearhead innovative solutions. KCG college is “Best Automobile engineering college in Chennai”

The Department of Automobile Engineering at KCG College was started in the year 2018 with a sanctioned intake of 60 students. The department is equipped with highly qualified faculty of proven ability and state-of-the-art laboratories that cater to the needs of the industry. The department further encourages professional activity of the staff and students through SAE INDIA and also provides value added trainings, workshops and seminars to all the students to gain practical exposure in their area of interest.

Students are continuously encouraged to pursue individual projects which would enable them to enrich their technical skills and knowledge. We also ensure that each of our students go for an in-plant training during their summer and winter vacations. The college owns an Inferno racing team which is being governed by expert staff members and industrial representatives from around the world. These forums provide the platform for students to enrich their knowledge in the automotive field and also to have an exposure to the recent trends in the automobile industry.

The department owns off road bikes and cars which will provide a keen interest for students in the learning of design technology. We also have a bonded relationship with major OEM’s (BMW, Ford and Hyundai) and they have sponsored fully loaded vehicles and engines for the study purpose of our students.

STRENGTH OF MATERIALS AND FLUID MECHANICS AND MACHINERY LABORATORY
The strength of a material depends on its ability to sustain a load without undue deformation or failure. As a result, several types of tests have been developed to evaluate a material’s strength under varying loads that are static and dynamic.
In fluid mechanics laboratory students would acquire knowledge in fluid properties and characteristics of flow. Compute loses in circular cross sections using conservation laws. Analyze the performance of pumps, turbines and hydraulic machines.
COMPUTER AIDED MACHINE DRAWING
Students will gain knowledge, the basic drafting techniques from paper to machine using AutoCAD designing software. It would be a great exposure to enable students to know about automobile components. To provide hands on experience to develop 2D models (engineering drawings, part drawings) of machine components.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS/LISTENING & SPEAKING
Students would be given training on soft skill development, communication skills and career guidance. Recognize and manage the complex processes of communication in order to achieve performance excellence through interpersonal skill team building. Identify and apply new skills and strategies to enhance individual and team performance.
AUTOMOTIVE COMPONENTS LABORATORY
Students will learn to dismantle and assemble the automobile components. Understand different types of frames, chassis, transmission and other mounting parts used in various automobiles. Understand the spark ignition & compression ignition engines fuel system (2 Stoke & 4 Stoke).
ELECTRONICS AND MICROPROCESSORS LABORATORY:
Fundamental knowledge on electronic components like bread board, transistor, resistor, inductor and its applications. Ability to understand basic interfacing concepts( Analog to digital convertors). Understanding the architecture of Microprocessor kits and interfacing them in automobiles( Temperature control).Simple programs using arithmetic and logical operations.
AUTOMOTIVE FUELS AND LUBRICANTS LABORATORY:
Students gain knowledge about testing the lubricants and fuels used for IC & CI engines. Conduct the test of fuels and oils(Flash and fire points ). Study of International and National standards for fuels and lubricants.(Euro 6, BSIV) Study of Octane (Petrol )number and Cetane (Diesel) Number of fuels. Ability to characteristic and chase the fuels and Lubricants for the automobiles to our nation requirements. Entire globe is working on alternate fuels which energise the students to choose their research interest based on this laboratory.
COMPUTER AIDED ENGINE AND CHASSIS DESIGN LABORATORY:
Students on completing this laboratory can learn to design automobile engine components and efficiently use modelling software (CATIA, PRO-E, ADAMS, ANSYS) for automotive parts and its assembly. Students can gain a visual knowledge on engine mounting assembly, Chassis mounting assembly, Clutch Assembly, Gearbox Assembly, Suspension assembly, drive line and rear axle assembly, transmissions assembly features.
TWO AND THREE WHEELERS :
To train the students to conduct performance test on two and three wheelers (2 Stoke & 4 Stoke Engines). Train students to assemble engine mounting and chassis mounting and its sub-systems. Gain knowledge about the functionality of Brakes and wheels. To discuss and learn trouble shooting methodologies in two & three wheelers service point of view.
ENGINE PERFORMANCE AND EMISSION TESTING LABORATORY:
On Completing this laboratory students will learn how to set up test rigs for engine testing and validation. Software’s related to performance validation of engines will be a additional knowledge to the students which helps them to be more confident in facing interviews. The main outcome of this laboratory is to develop skills and knowledge in experimental methodology, engine testing and the necessary instrumentation and machinery required to undertake measurements on combustion engines.
VEHICLE MAINTENANCE LABORATORY:
Students will perform basic services on the vehicles, ie. oil changes, tire rotations, and brake services. The student will be able to explain the proper service needs of a vehicle so they can properly communicate with repair professionals regarding vehicle service. Student will be able to identify proper or improper A/C system operation, students will work on safety of automotive systems. Industry oriented trainings and entrepreneurship skills will be gained by the students on completing the laboratory.
