Guest Lecture by Mr. Reginald Lourd Raj R, Doctoral Student, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IISc- Bangalore

A guest lecture was arranged for III year Mechanical students (A & B Section) on the topic “Rocket Propulsion”subject Gas Dynamics and Jet Propulsion held on th March 2019 at S58 classroom. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Reginald Lourd Raj R,doctoral student at IISc Bangalore.

Mr. Reginald started his lecture be introducing Newton’s laws, which form the foundations of Jet and Rocket propulsion. This was followed by a clear classification of chemical rockets, based on the propellants, size, applications, etc. The construction and working principles of Solid propellant, Liquid Propellant and Hybrid Rocket engines were covered in detailed. The performance of various solid and liquid fuels was compared and studied. The final part of the lecture dealt with Thrust generation and performance of rocket motors. Concepts of Thrust, Specific impulse, propulsive efficiency, thermal efficiency, thrust coefficient, weight flow coefficient, characteristic velocity was derived from fundamentals. Several problems that appeared in the past Anna university papers were solved. The students were provided with his lecture slides, a Problem sheet and a Summary Sheet.
