The Department of Civil Engineering organized a Knowledge Enhancement Seminar Sponsored by AICTE- INAE by Distinguished Visiting Professor on “COASTAL PROTECTION STRUCTURES” at KCG College of Technology on 13th October 2018. The program was sponsored by Indian National Academy of Engineering in association with AICTE under the Distinguished Visiting Professorship Scheme for a period of one year which spans from 1stJune 2018 to 31st May 2019. Dr. M.V. Ramana Murthy, Scientist-G, Director – National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) graced the occasion. About 95 students and faculty (internal and external) attended the knowledge enhancement seminar.

The seminar started with the formal inaugural function at 11.00 a.m in the Seminar hall. Chief Guest Dr. M.V. Ramana Murthy, Registrar Dr. C. Chinnaraj, Head of the Department Dr. V. Vandhana Devi were present on the dais. The Head of the Department welcomed the Chief Guest, internal and external faculty and civil engineering students to the knowledge enhancement seminar. Dr. V. Vandhana Devi shared with the participants that from now on Dr. M.V. Ramana Murthy will be the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Department of Civil Engineering and he will be closely associated with KCG College of Technology. She also encouraged the students to deploy the knowledge shared by the guest in their future careers. The chief guest was introduced by Mr. R. Deepak. Registrar Dr. C. Chinnaraj honoured the guest with a memento.

Dr. M.V. Ramana Murthy delivered technical speech on the topic Coastalprotection Structures. He gave a detailed presentation on his recent project Restoration of Pondicherry Beach. He presented a study of the coastline, data on waves and near shore current movements. He explained in detail regarding the methods which needs to be adopted to restore the Pondicherry beach to its earlier stages. He also talked about the two reefs, a near shore wedge-shaped reef to the north of the city foreshore and an offshore reef for the south of the city foreshore which was built by the city to restore the beach along the Pondicherry coastline. The reefs provided a mild barrier to sediment losses which enabled sand to move naturally to the north while slowing sand loss from the city foreshore.

The student participants and faculty were very impressed by his presentation and there was a huge applause among the participants for his interesting lecture. The Head of the Department thanked the chief guest and also informed about the project titled “Design of Intake Structure for a Desalination plant in Agatti Island” carried out by Civil Engineering students in association with NIOT. Further she requested for more real time projects for final Semester students in NCCR and NIOT and got the acceptance from Dr. M. V. Ramana Murthy for the same. The seminar came to a close with a vote of thanks by    Dr. P.S. Aravind Raj.
