The department of Mechanical Engineering has organized a guest lecture on “Recent Trends in Material Science” for second year mechanical engineering students and staff members of mechanical and physics department. Professor Daniel started the lecture from the basics of materials science and explained the importance of the molecular structure of ferrous alloys, the importance of vacancies, dislocations in surface, volume and in the edge  deformations  and its  influence on the material properties . He highlighted the ductility and brittle nature of materials, the investigation of the orientation of the slip plane with respect to the applied stress and slip as a result of simple shearing stress. Also,he illustrated the  resolution of the axial tensile load along the shear plane, normal to the tensile load and the slip movement in the direction of shear on the shear plane. It was pointed out that close-packed rows are farther apart from each other than rows that are not close-packed, therefore they can slip past each other with less interference. Since the atoms are not bonded directly together, but are merely held together by the free electron gas, these close-packed rows of atoms could slide past each other particularly easily without coming apart. In addition, less displacement is required to move the atoms into unstable positions from which they will be pulled forward into stable ones, when these stable positions are closer together. After the lecture session Mr.Shiva Shankar from the department of mechanical engineering and staff members from the physics department interacted with Professor about their research work.
