A two day workshop on “Automotive Hands on Training” was conducted on 21^st& 22^nd May / 22^nd& 23^rd May 2018.  The workshop was conducted for the third year Mechanical Engineering students.  Total 57 students registered for the workshop and it was divided into 6 batches.  On day one in the forenoon session, Orientation program was conducted in the seminar hall and brief introduction about the internal combustion engines and its working were given.  In the afternoon session, 3 batches have been allotted with bike engine and 3 batches with car engine.  The students were given training about the dismantling of the engines given to them.

On day two in the forenoon session, students were trained to assemble the dismantled engines.  After completing the assembling session of the given engine, the batches were exchanged to other types of engine for dismantling it.  In the afternoon session there were trained to assemble the given engine.  Troubleshooting of the engines was also taught during the training session.

Resource person was Mr. Xavier Jaganathan and team from “Goodwin Industries”, Chennai.  The feedback was later collected and workshop was found to be useful for the participants.

The Workshop on BIM using Revit Structure started with the welcome address and introduction of the resource person by Dr. V. Vandhana Devi, Head of the Department and continued with explanation of basic tools, menus and options in the Structure section of Revit software by Trainer Mr. Vinay, KKM Soft, Chennai.

About 23 participants attended the workshop. We had participants from industry and other educational institutions.

The session continued with an interactive hands-on session of Revit Structure software viz., preparation of templates, formation of grid to locate the footings, centerline for placing the beams, fixing the columns at required position, fixing the slabs and structural wall panels. Transformation and translational repeat of elements/objects in Cartesian or polar coordinates, mirroring objects and cloning properties for similar elements required were also discussed and trained. Importing templates and pre-designed objects, Exporting fabricated objects to other files, rendering and report preparation of schedule of materials were also the part of the hands on training during the workshop. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the coordinator and distribution of certificates to the participants by the Head of the Department.

The ‘Hands-on Training with Total Station’started with the welcome address by the HoD and continued with the explanation of basic of surveying, and working principles of Total Station. The session continued with an interactive hands-on session of Total Station instruments and the participants were explained about the various parts and its application. Also the participants were trained to handle the instrument for measuring linear distance, heights, vertical/horizontal angles, etc. The training concluded with the measurement of area, inaccessible distances, height of object and check leveling.

The Madras Engines and Emission Research Foundation (MEERF) Chennai, India

The department of Mechanical Engineering organized the seminar on “The Challenges in the Automotive Engines and Emissions Sector Globally and in India” at Mirza Seminar Theatre on 27.06.2018 from 2.30 pm to 5.00 pm.

The seminar was extremely useful and packed with current engine emission technologies and the audience gained knowledge about the challenges in the engine emission testing requirements.It shapes the methodology for BS VI engine emission norms in India. We gained a clear idea about how engine manufacturers are overcoming the emission trade-offin engines. And also they presented details about the program they roll-out in India for engineering students.

Dr. Bharadwaj Sathiamoorthy,started his presentation withthe NO_x emission levels of recent modern diesel vehicle generations observed in several real world driving conditions which were observed to be clearly higher than demanded in the type approval procedure. Due to the growing number of modern diesel engine concepts equipped with coated catalytic exhaust after treatment, the fraction of NO₂ of the total tailpipe NO_x emissions is predicted to continue to increase in the next few years.

Bearing in mind the upcoming tightening of the NO₂ air quality limits and the steady increase of traffic volumes, excesses of the NO₂ air quality limits at roadside locations have to be expected to an increasing extent for the beginning of the next decade.

He also described about the issue of particulate emissions originated from the diesel engine combustion process can be regarded as being technically solved due to the extensive introduction of diesel particle filters in the vehicle fleet if these systems will prove a high efficiency over the entire vehicle life in real world operation conditions.

However, particulate emissions from road transport will continue to be in the focus of public attention due to particle emissions caused by dust re-suspension and abrasion processes.

Then we came to know about MEERF- a Non-Profit Organisation which engages in research projects to reduce automotive, commercial and off road engine emissions in India. With strong research faculty at its core, working relationships with OEM’s and test laboratories across India, they aim to empower the academic community through research and testing based Programs. He also shared the different concepts and projects which are tested in their lab.

THE MEERF R&D PROGRAM FOR RESEARCH ASPIRANTS:

The program is a 10-12 Month Research Program and each candidate will work on current trending research topic in the Automobile industry under guidance of their research mentor. Accepted candidates gain access to wherein, candidates will train in Emissions Testing, set up, Engine Test setup, Data Acquisition, Calibrations, Design of Experiments, Statistical Data Analysis and Reduction.

All Programs are directed by Leading Scientists (Mentors) from West Virginia University, US and India. Letters of Recommendation & Support from MEERF and MEERF scientists for MS and PhD Admissions & Scholarships in any US, Europe and Australian Universities.

Career Assistance (Jobs):Ashok Leyland, Ford, Tenneco, Ecocat, TVS, TAFE, and Mahindra & Mahindra etc. Candidates will also have access to our connected network of Professors and Scientists in Clemson, Carnegie Mellon, UC, Riverside, University of Houston, and MIT etc

The speaker did keep us excited with his efficacy of language and spontaneous interactive approach. The students were then allowed to ask questions which were well answered by the speakers. It was an overall enriching experience and we look further for other such opportunities where both the staff and the students can be benefitted.

The one day workshop on “Introduction to python programming” organized by Mrs.R.AdlineFreeda AP/IT from the departments of IT for students of Multiple Disciplines(IT,EEE,ECE,& E&I) on 29th –June -2018 in IT Lab I.
Mr.DoraiThodla,Industry Mentor KCG College was the resource person for the workshop.The workshop was planned to help students convert their theoretical knowledge to practical knowledge. With this view, we plan 4 sessions on working Saturdays for a Microproducts course. This Introduction to Python is a pre-requisite.
The programming language Python serves a broad application domain ranging from short scripts to full-blown software systems (e.g. Google uses Python). It gives an introduction to libraries of available components, and how to use these for building your own application.
Around 20 students from various students who were interested in programming and problem solving selected to attend the workshop. The sessions were spread over from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M.The sessions used a variety of approaches— Hand-on Training, discussions etc.The session commenced after the break and Mr.DoraiThodla introduced python programming by giving simple problems and easy learning approaches.

Since the session was fully hands on, the  students were brought to the learning mode and had created an interest on python programming The students were given  simple exercises to work out which was very helpful to them to understand easily. The students gave very good feedback about the session.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized this workshop for Higher Secondary school students & Polytechnic Students to inculcate knowledge in Two Wheeler Maintenance & Trouble Shooting. Totally 133 students of Vidhya Matriculation Higher Secondary School Perumbakkam, Government Higher secondary School Thoraipakkam & Automobile Department Students of Hindustan Institute of Engineering Technology Padappai, participated in the Programme.

  The Programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Mr.P.Xavier Jaganathan., CEO, Goodwin Industries Chennai, in presence of Dr.Sumathi Poobal, Vice Principal, Dr.S.Ramesh, Prof. & Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering & Dr.K.Vijayaraja, Prof. & Head, Department of Aeronautical Engineering.

The Programme was coordinated by Mr.D.Muralikrishnan, Asst. Prof., Department of Mechanical Engineering & Mr.A.Sivaramakrishnan, Asst. Prof., Department of Mechanical Engineering.

After Inauguration, the session was handled byMr.D.Muralikrishnan, Asst. Prof., Department of Mechanical Engineering, in which power point presentation will be given on how to do service in schedule, how to maintain the vehicle and also described about the durability of the parts in two wheelers.

The post lunch session was Hands-on training handled bythe team comprises of Mr.D.Muralikrishnan, Asst. Prof., Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mr.A.Sivaramakrishnan,Asst. Prof., Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mr.Periyasamy, Mechanic-KCG & Mr.Bhaskar, Electrician – HITS, about the description of parts in two wheeler by Showing a Pulsar 150 bike followed by the session on how to do Adjustments in Chains, Brakes, Idling tuning, Clutch, Accelerator, Disc Brake and Engine oil change in the above said two wheeler was done. The preventive maintenance of Air filter and carburetor was described.

Also Mr.A.Sivaramakrishnan, Asst. Prof., Department of Mechanical Engineering, described the difference between two stroke engine and four stroke engine using cut section Model and described the Functions of Engines lab.

            Finally the students were sent to aeronautical department to view the lab facilities, there Mr.Venkatramanan, Asst. Prof., Department of Aeronautical Engineering, gave brief introduction about the Laboratories in the Aeronautical department.

            The Participants Certificate was distributed by Mr.S.JesudassThomas, Assoc. Prof., Department of Mechanical Engineering, followed by valedictory address.

Build2Learn session for the girl students was conducted on 14th July 2018 at KMC auditorium. The volunteers from Build2Learn came to our premises to facilitate girl students in various septa. Ms.Sruthi of final year CSE also turned up to support the students. The event starts at 1.30 pm with an introduction about the club and handed over the session to Ms. Bhavani, a volunteer of Build2Learn Team, an alumnus of KCG. She has started the session by introducing her team member Mr. Asish Cherian, a student of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science. She shared the motto of the program- Build2Learn is an initiative by a group of volunteers to help people learn to programme by building useful micro-products- Build to Learn and Learn to Build. Around 36 students had participated in the session. The students have been grouped into a different category and they started working as a group in different domains like web applications, basics of Python programming and Android Applications. The volunteers helped each group then there and explained the basic concepts of the applications. The session ended at 3.15 pm with students feedback. Most of the students shared that the program was very much useful and they would have expecting same kind of events hereafter. As a suggestion of improvement students said, they need more time to do more practice.

Micro Product Workshop

The Department of Information Technology had taken an initiative with the support of our Industry Mentor, Mr.DoraiThodla to strengthen the programming and problem solving skills among the students across the departments by helping them to build micro products.Around 25 students from various departments(CSE,IT,ECE,E&I and EEE) are attending the sessions. The session commenced at 1.40 pm and Mr.DoraiThodla ,Industry mentor was the resource person for the session. He gave an insight about Internet of things and how to make smart world with the help of IOT. Then the students were grouped into teams of 3 to 4 based on their area of interest. The students were asked to identify a problem and one person from each team were asked to present their problems and ideas.

         The session commenced at 1.40 pm and Mr.DoraiThodla ,Industry mentor and a member of  his team Mr.Ashish were the resource persons for the session.The students were taught about the basics of python and also he suggested a website(Xin Y minutes)for selflearning during the session.MrDoraiThodla also had helped the students for learning.Around 2.30 Mr. Ashish introduced Flask and HTML for Web App Development which was found very useful for the students. Also he gave awareness about the learning resources available online for App Development in Android.

KCG College of Technology signed a MOU with KKM Soft on
27th July 2018. KKM Soft Pvt. Ltd. is one of the Gold Partners to Autodesk in
India for the region of Chennai and Coimbatore in the state of Tamilnadu.
KKM soft is an Autodesk Authorized Training Centre and Autodesk Authorized
Certification Centre with 15 years of industry experience. Mr. B Ramasamy,
Managing Director of KKM visited KCG college of Technology and a MOU was
signed with KCG College of Technology. Dr.G.Prabhakaran, Principal,
represented KCG college of Technology and signed the MOU.

The main aim of this MOU is to provide software training for students &
joint certification on Autodesk 2D & 3D Design Technology for the trained
students. The MoU also facilitates to organize workshops, seminars and provide
Value added software training to all the students and to improve student’s 3D
design skills using Building Information Modeling and Digital prototyping
concepts and to enhance the employability of the students.

In collaboration with Nokia, IET Chennai Local Network Conducted a competition named Smart City Challenge 2018, with the objective of encouraging students developing conceptual prototypes for Smart City.  The completion covered wider areas of smart city like smart transportation, smart living, smart infrastructure, smart energy, Smart Industry etc. The competition was conducted in three different rounds as detailed below:

Round 1 : Submission of Ideas

Students were called to submit their smart ideas to ietclnsmartcity@gmail.com on or before 31 July 2018in the prescribed format.

Around 60 ideas have been received and the ideas were scrutinized by the committee constituted by the Chennai Local Network.  20 ideas were selected for the next round based on the innovation, relevance to the theme, feasibility etc. Results were intimated to the students before 5 August 2018.

Round 2: Presentation of Ideas

This round was conducted at KCG College of Technology on 11 August 2018. 20 teams have invited for the presentation of their ideas. 19 teams have reported and they have presented their ideas in front the panel experts Mr. Badhrinathsoundararajan, Software Development Engineer in Test, Amazonand Mr. Kumar Sachidanandam, Co-founder, Ydealogy

One team presented their ideas through prerecorded video and the jury members interacted with the participants through skype call.

The following ten teams are qualified for the next round.
