KCG College celebrates World Citizen Day

By celebrating World Citizen Day we celebrate inclusiveness, embrace diversity and make everyone feel that they are part of the global community, said Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chairperson, Hindustan Group of Institutions, while delivering her presidential address on the occasion of World Citizen Day organized by KCG College of Technology, Chennai. She also highlighted the need for educational institutions to reach out to the underprivileged in the society and inculcate compassion and empathy in students.

Today, over four billion people are wired and connected to the Internet; it has brought about information and communication revolution and has changed every aspect of our lives, said the Chief Guest Mr. Mukund Padmanabhan, Editor, The Hindu. Discussing in detail how media influences our thoughts and behaviour in digital era, he asked the gathering to be cautious about fake news and breaking news and be critical of what they read, watch and consume.

Earlier, participating in a panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Anita Manuel, Dean, Student Affairs, panellists Lt. General Bobby Mathews (Retd.), Joint Director, Hindustan International Schools, Dr. Revathy Parameswaran, Principal, PS Senior Secondary School, and Mr. V.S. John, St. Michael’s Academy shared the various initiatives taken by their schools to help students embrace diversity and promote gender equality and inclusiveness.

The Chief Guest also gave away certificates and cash prizes to winners of Debate, Quiz, Essay Writing and Poster Making competitions held in connection with World Citizen Day.

FDP ON LIMIT STATE DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES

Day 1 – Session 1 – Inaugural Function

Dr. S. R. Satish Kumar, Professor, Structural Engineering Division, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural function of the Three days Faculty Development Program.

Dr. G. Prabhakaran, Principal, KCG College of Technology, Dr. K. Sarukesi, Dean Academic, KCG College of Technology and Dr. Vandhana Devi, Head of the Department, Department of Civil Engineering, KCG College of Technology presided over the function.

The Inaugural function started with the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest and all the dignitaries and Tamizh thai vazhthu.

Dr. V. Vandhana Devi welcomed the Chief guest, Principal, Dean and all the participants. She emphasised on the need for faculty development programs for faculty members. She also elaborated about the three days faculty development program on Limit state design of steel structures.

Dr. G. Prabhakaran delivered the presidential address in appreciating the department for organizing the faculty development program and also encouraging the department in conducting such activities continuously in the future.

Dr. K. Sarukesi addressed the gathering appreciating the department for organizing the faculty development program and discussed about the role of civil engineers in the society and also suggested books that have to be read by all civil engineers.

Dr. S. R. Satish Kumar delivered the inaugural address in the need for such programs for the teaching faculties to enhance their technical knowledge and encouraged the participants to observe and learn from the lecturing skills of the different resource persons.

Mr. M. Pitchi Rajan thanked the chief guest, all the dignitaries and the participants for showing their interest in participating in the faculty development program by delivering the vote of thanks.

MoU with NATIONAL CENTRE FOR COASTAL RESEARCH

KCG College of Technology, Department of Civil Engineering signed a MoU with National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR). NCCR is an attached office of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India. NCCR was established in Chennai, in the year 1998 for implementing IDA assisted Environment Management Capacity Building Project. Presently, NCCR is continuing its activities in the field of Coastal Research, fully funded by MoES. Dr. M.V. Ramana Murthy (Scientist-G), Director NCCR, welcomed the Principal and faculty members of Civil Engineering. Dr. G. Prabhakaran, Principal KCG College of Technology gave an insight about the college. Dr. Uma Sankar Panda (Scientist-E) gave an insight about NCCR. Also he explained about the various projects and research activities undertaken by NCCR in the area of Coastal Research. The MoU was signed by Dr. M. V. Ramana Murthy (Scientist-G), Director, NCCR and Dr. G. Prabhakaran, Principal, KCG College of Technology. Dr. M.V. Ramana Murthy, Director NCCR appreciated Dr. V. Vandhana Devi / HoD Civil Engineering for putting all her sincere efforts to make this MoU happen between NCCR and KCG.

The main objective of this MoU is to develop collaborative activities in the area of applied research, training and education to foster the development of students. Also the MoU encourages interactions between the Scientists, Research fellows, Faculty members and students of both the institutions. The MoU was signed for 2 years. The event came to a close with a vote of thanks by Dr. V. Vandhana Devi, HoD / Civil Engineering.

  3. Deputation of students for Industrial training and In-plant training on-site will be arranged for NCCR funded projects.
  4. Special technical training will be arranged for both students and faculty members in NCCR campus.
  5. To formulate ministry funded research projects and HRD plans between NCCR and KCG College of Technology.
  6. To utilize various lab facilities and equipments at NCCR, by both students and faculty members of KCG College of Technology.
  7. To exchange scholarly information between Scientist of NCCR and Faculty members of KCG College of Technology.
  8. Publications of Joint Research papers, books and magazines by both the faculties of the respective institutions.
  9. Potential joint funded projects applications and executions between NCCR and KCG College of Technology.
  10. Student projects will be carried out under the guidance of NCCR Scientist.

Workshop On Presentation Skills And Thesis Drafting

Inaugural Function

Dr. V. Vandhana Devi welcomed the Dean (Academics) and all the participants. She emphasised on the need for presentation skills for faculty members and briefed about the Workshop schedule.          Dr. Vandhana thanked the participants for showing their interest in participating in the workshop by delivering the vote of thanks.

Dr. K. Sarukesi appreciated the department for organizing the workshop and suggested tips and techniques for improving presentation skill and public speaking. Mr. R. Deepak introduced the resource person of the session Dr. V. Vandhana Devi to the gathering.

Dr. V. Vandhana Devi explained the audience about the need of presentation skills for the teaching faculty members that would be helpful in various aspects of during the course of their career.

  • Faculty handling theory subjects would make their lectures more interesting by presenting the theory content as pictures and videos. The students would be difficult to imagine theory content if taught on black board and lectures don’t help them at all.
  • Faculty guiding students in projects such as Final Year Projects, Student Project competition, Students Presentation competition, Seminars, Paper Presentations must mentor the students and guide them in improving their communication and presentation skills.
  • Faculties undergoing research and publication activities and pursuing their Ph.D. need to improve in the aspects of confidence, do’s and don’ts of gestures, ways of interacting and answering the committee members.

WELLNESS PROGRAM

On account of Swami Vivekananda’s 156th Birth Anniversary,Members of Heart fulness Voluntary Organisation conducted the meditation program for youths to improve their mental strength. The volunteers were:

  4. Ms Nandita

The program started with a welcome note by Ms D. Revathy, Student Counsellor.

An introductory talk about meditation and its usefulness was given by Mr Vinod Mishra.

Ms Nandita guided the students in meditation process, first with relaxation techniques, followed by meditation for 30 minutes.

The students were able to go with the flow and meditate. After meditation the students’ feedback was that, some of them went off to sleep, some were not able to restrict their wandering thoughts, and some found it difficult to sit… Mr Mishra explained that all these will be initially felt and once students start practicing regularly, it will fall in place.

A staff said that, she got headache. She was explained that,she would have restricted her thought flow, which causes headache, and initially these will be felt during the meditation process and it is always better to start the practise with proper guidance.

The volunteers were willing to come and do the follow-up sessions and train the students at any time and it is purely a service offered free of cost.

The program ended with a Vote of Thanks.

Substance Abuse Awareness Program

Participants: I year students

Adolescence stage is a stress and storm period. During this crucial period they enter the college life and are exposed to a new environment and people. They are in search of their identity and freedom and are more curious to exercise their freedom, explore and experiment of whatever they do, see or come across.

In this stage they are easily prone to any kind of habits. Exercising discipline and being cautious is a bit challenging. They are easily vulnerable and get into the habits of smoking, alcohol consuming and using other substances which are highly addictive by nature. So, as an institution, it is our responsibility to educate our students on the substance abuse and its consequences.

An awareness program on Substance Abuse was conducted for I year students in their respective classrooms by Ms D. Revathy, Student Counsellor @ KCG College of Technology.

This program created an awareness amongst the students about the addictive nature, ill effects and the consequences of Substance Abuse.

KCG – BOSCH Health Care Centre

Centre of Excellence in Medical Electronics

The Centre of Excellence in Medical Electronics was initiated in collaboration with Robert Bosch, Bangalore and Department of Electronics and Communication, KCG College of Technology on 04.12.18.This MOU aims on the usage of Fundus Camera developed by Robert Bosch and analysing the images for various eye related disorders.

Faculties of ECE,EEE and EIE were trained by Mr.Ravikumar, Senior Project Manager, and Robert Bosch on 10.01.19 to handle the Fundus Camera and to analysis Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) with the images captured.

Further tie-up was made with Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai to assist us in medical research and also allowing us to take part in their medical camps. In connection to this, a team of three members, Dr.V.Thulasi Bai, HOD/ECE,Mr. Sadasivam. S, AP/ECE and Ms. B.Thyla, AP/ECE took part in the camp organised by Sankara Nethralaya on 21.02.19 at Police Quarters, Kondithoppu, Chennai. This camp was conducted especially for the economically weak residence of nearby area. More than 50 people were examined and 30 potential eye images were captured. These images will be used in research on diabetic retinopathy with the help of medicals experts form Sanakara Nethralaya.

Second camp was conducted on 23.02.19 in Seetha Lakshmi Vidhyalaya at Vasudhevan Nagar, Chennai. In this camp two students of ECE department were involved along with Ms.Kavitha Balamurugan,Asso.,Prof/ECE and Ms.B.Thyla,AP/ECE .

Intra-Department Mini Project Challenge -2019

The Department of EIE and the Student Affairs of the college jointly organized the  Mini Project Challenge on  23rd February 2019. The Mini Project Competition was a unique competition for the third year students of the department. A total of 35 students as 9 different teams exhibited their projects in this event.. The final round of evaluation was carried outby eminent person from industry–Mr. Mohamed Habeeb, System Engineering Specialist, ABB Ability Innovation Centre. Guest Lecture by Shri.Subash Kumar, Freelance Designer

Department of Fashion Technology arranged a Guest Lecture of Shri. Subhash Kumar, Freelance Designer for the staff and students of the department on 28-02-2019 at Conference Hall, Dean Office. Shri.Subhash Kumar Chirayil Gopalan graduated as a Textile Engineer in 2001 from the Indian Institute of Handlooms and Textiles, Govt of India, Ministry of Textiles, Salem and specialisation in Textile Designing from London under the guidance of Mrs. Rebecca Hoyes, Associate Lecturer, Central St. Martins, University of Arts London.The designer elaborated about his journey and the success stories of projects he handled viz. Revival of ancient woven textiles to suit modern interiors, Floral Lampas – A Revival Project, Jacobean patterns, Banarasi Handloom uniform saree project for Taj Group and Kokeshi – an exclusive collection for a celebrity Pop Singer. Endorsing the sketches created by the students, he guided the students how to transfer their sketches into fabric with required texture and structure from which the targeted garment is stitched. He has also assured to conduct 4 days’ workshop to demonstrate the same in future.

KCG HACKATHON 2019

Hackathon combines the terms “hacking” and “marathon” and implies an intense, uninterrupted, period of programming. More specifically, a Hackathon is a highly engaging, continuous event in which people in small groups produce a working software prototype in a limited amount of time.

 KCG Hackathon 2019  is an 6 hours Software Hackathon organized by the Programming club of KCG College of Technology in collaboration with Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) on 01st March 2019.  17 teams (Total 45 participants) from 5 colleges participated in the event hacking some real problems.

The event started with an Icebreaking session. Mr. Dorai Thodla briefed the rules and regulation of the Hackathon. The Coding Timer started running at 09.30 am

The theme of the Hackathon was “AI in Teaching and Learning”.

Participants were asked to work on any of the following categories:

  1. Chatbots
  2. ML based prediction applications
  3. ML based recommendation systems
  4. UX Design for Learning/Teaching Applications
  5. Animations or Explainer videos of an AI/ML concept

Participants were asked to produce any one of the outcomes from the above categories.

  1. A working prototype (code)
  2. A UI/UX prototype (using Balsamiq or any other wire framing technology)
  3. An animation of how the product works
