Department of Mechanical Engineering conducted a faculty development program on Automotive Electronics in Seminar Hall F-14, KCG college of Technology on 27th December 2017. The main objective of the program was to dissipate the latest information about the future technologies in automotive electronics industry.
The program started at 9:30 am, the resource persons, the dignitaries and participants were introduced and welcomed by the Mr. P. Jagwant. Later Our Principal Dr. G Prabakaran delivered the presidential address and welcomed Mr. Anand P. R , Assistant General Manager, Delphi-TVS to deliver first session of the FDP.
Mr. Anand took an interesting session about vehicle connectivity and its growing scope in the near future, he illustrated about the futuristic features vehicle will be possessing and why it will become the minimum requirement to ride the vehicle in road. Next session was delivered Mr. K. Balasubramanian, Head-operation & Technical Services, Migatronic, India. He took an engaging session about robotic welding and its function in the future production centres and how production centre can run with minimum man power and skilled labours. Later Mr. P. S Sreenivasan, Senior purchasing manager, Ford Motors India delivered a session about Future of automotive industry, capturing the future trend. The session was fascinating as he gave glimpse of Ford Motor’s perspective about the future, how they are going to change themselves to adapt to deliver the consumer needs in the future.
The Program was concluded by the valedictory delivered by Mr. M. Siva Shankar, Asst. Professor, KCG College of Technology. Around 40 members attended and got benefited from this program. The program was successful. It delivered the objectives as clear as possible.

Department of Civil Engineering Organized a Two-Day Workshop on “Modern Surveying”. The Workshopwas conducted from 28th to 29th December 2017. The objective of this workshop was to train and upgrade the participants on the advancement in the field of modern Surveying. A total of 104 participants were trained through this Workshop in which 91 students and 4 faculty members registered as internal participants and 7 students along with 1 faculty attended as External Participants from HIET Polytechnic College.
The Chief Guest invited for the Programme was Dr. D.Thirumalaivasan, Professor & Director, Centre for Disaster Mitigation Management. The Inauguration of the Event began with the welcome address given by the Convener of the Event, Dr.V.Vandhana Devi, HoD-Civil Engineering followed by which the presidential address was delivered by The Principal, Dr.G.Prabhakaran and Dr. Sumathi Poobal, Vice Principal, felicitated the event and the department.
The first day of the workshop had three sessions handled by three eminent guest speakers. The first session of the day was addressed by Dr.D.Thirumalaivasan, who took over the session with interesting and informative recent advancements and techniques happening in the field of surveying and about the best equipment used in extreme conditions.
The Second session was delivered by the guest speaker Prof. E. Velappan, Associate Professor, Institute of Remote Sensing, Anna University and gave his informative lecture on the significance of Total station and explained in detail the functions involved in angle, distance and co-ordinate measurements and how the data processing is done and also explained the features and the types of total station used in the field in recent times.
The third and last session of the day was taken over by Dr.K.Yogeswari, Associate Professor, B.S.Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology. The topic for the session was on Hydrographic surveying, its methods and equipment used in this type of surveying along with the importance of nautical charting were explained in detailed.

The second day of the workshop (29.12.17) had two sessions in the morning which was followed by a demonstration session with leading experts on Total station. The key note speaker for the first session, Mr.D.Ragavan, Head of operations, Indian Geo informatics Centre gave his informative lecture on case studies in differential global positioning system and made the participants to understand the real ways in which this type of positioning system is practically used.
The second session of the day was led by Dr.K.Srinivasaraju, Associate Professor, Institute of Remote sensing, he enlightened the participants in this session about the Global Positioning System, tools used in GPS and the history behind the satellites that each country owns for their military purposes made this session more interesting. Detailed explanation on the features, principles, characteristics with relevant examples were also given.
A Demonstration session with hands on training was given by the experts from Amil Limited on Total Station for all the participants. Experts explained the uses, features and operation of a Total Station and then the participants were taken to the field for a practical hands on training with the instrument. This oppurtunity created a great chance for every participant to experience, learn and develop their skill in using a total Station in a Practical Environment.

Report on Guest lecture by Dr.B.S.Sundar Daniel, Professor, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Center of Nanotechnology,IIT Roorkee on 29/12/2017. Venue: Hall S13 Time: 11 a.m.

The department of Mechanical Engineering has organized a guest lecture on “Recent Trends in Material Science” for second year mechanical engineering students and staff members of mechanical and physics department. Professor Daniel started the lecture from the basics of materials science and explained the importance of the molecular structure of ferrous alloys, the importance of vacancies, dislocations in surface, volume and in the edge  deformations  and its  influence on the material properties . He highlighted the ductility and brittle nature of materials, the investigation of the orientation of the slip plane with respect to the applied stress and slip as a result of simple shearing stress. Also,he illustrated the  resolution of the axial tensile load along the shear plane, normal to the tensile load and the slip movement in the direction of shear on the shear plane. It was pointed out that close-packed rows are farther apart from each other than rows that are not close-packed, therefore they can slip past each other with less interference. Since the atoms are not bonded directly together, but are merely held together by the free electron gas, these close-packed rows of atoms could slide past each other particularly easily without coming apart. In addition, less displacement is required to move the atoms into unstable positions from which they will be pulled forward into stable ones, when these stable positions are closer together. After the lecture session Mr.Shiva Shankar from the department of mechanical engineering and staff members from the physics department interacted with Professor about their research work.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering Organized a Guest Lecture on “Mobile Communication – New Trend – from 2G to 5G” by Mr. A. S. Saravanan, Director, Vestel Telecom Services, Chennai, accompanied with Mr. Eazhumalai, for the second year ECE Students on 5 th Jan 2018 (Friday) between 11.00 a.m. and 12.50 p.m., at F14 Seminar Hall, KCG College of Technology. Mr. Saravanan conveyed the features of mobile communication from 2G to 5G with various parameters such as data rate, reliability, etc. and demonstrated the working of software defined radio using 2G communication. Mr. Eazhumalai discussed the concepts of MIMO communication, TDMA, FDMA, CDMA and OFDM technology. He discussed about the types of antennas and its pros and cons, with various propagation methods. The talk was very useful for the students.

The one day Faculty Development Program on “Counseling Training in Higher Education Abroad” organized by Higher Education Cell and Office of International Affairs, commenced at 10.40 am with a prayer. It was followed by welcome speech by Dr. Albert P’Rayan, Head, Higher Education Cell.

Session – 1 commenced at 11am. The initial lecture was by Mr. Rajaram of IDP Education. In his lecture he elaborated on the needs and expectations of the students in studying abroad. Some of the points he mentioned include the Subjects and Universities available in the five English speaking countries namely Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Canada and New Zealand. He also gave the details about intakes as well as about the tuition fees. He spoke in detail about the Eligibility and other Criteria.

He started the elaborations with Australia, the dream destination for students. In his lecture he covered all the points including the popular Universities and the courses available in Australia and also about the post study work rights.

The next session was on United Kingdom and it was covered by Ms. Ranjitha Shetty. She talked about the rich culture and heritage of UK referred to as the ancient destination. She touched upon Traditional and Modern University and their entry details. She also discussed the post study Tier system in UK.

Next she took over Canada the most popular destination now a day. She gave hints on the weather conditions prevailing at Canada and also about the various entrance examinations to be cleared before getting admission.

Mr. Rajaram continued the topic regarding admission for higher studies in Universities in New Zealand. He listed out all the requirements for applying to the Universities in New Zealand. He explained in detail about IELTS.

Finally Mr. Rajaram and Ms. RanjithaShetty explained the preparation details pertaining to Statement of Purpose and other salient features in filling up the application form. The morning session came to an end with vote of thanks proposed by

Dr. Parvathy from Hindustan University.

The second session after lunch was conducted by Dr. Shanthi Mohan of US India Education Foundation. She gave a lucid PowerPoint presentation on the following five points regarding admission to post graduate studies in USA:

3. Completing the application

4. Applying for Student Visa

5. Preparation for Departure to US

She elaborated on the Types of US Higher Education, Choosing a university, Scholarship opportunities, TOEFL & GRE and about Statement of Purpose (SOP). She gave full details about the financial assistance available to International Students and the useful websites and resources regarding the same.Dr. Shanthi Mohan then Highlighted the importance of getting proper letters of recommendation. During the lecture she gave tips and guidance for writing effective recommendation letters. Lots of case studies were discussed with ample interaction from participants.

The program came to a close with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Jaya, S&H Department, KCG College of Technology.

The Department of Civil Engineering conducted One-day Workshop on Career opportunities in Civil Engineering & How to Deal with Exam anxiety on 7 th January 2018 in F 14 Seminar Hall. The Program was attended by about 60 plus two students from different schools. Students from the following Schools participated in the workshop. 1. Kumara Raja Muthaiah School, Adyar 2. C.S.I. St. Pauls Higher Secondary School, Vepery 3. Government Higher Secondary School Velachery (GHSSV) 4. Government Higher Secondary School, Sholinganallur 5. Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sembakkam Mr. K. Venkatesan, Chairman Builders Association of India Southern Chapter and Mr. S. Ramaprabu, Secretary Builders Association of India were the guests. The Head of the Department, Dr. V. Vandhana Devi welcomed the gathering. Mr. Venkatesan, Chairman BAI and Mr. Ramaprabu Secretary BAI delivered a talk on Career opportunities in Civil Engineering and highlighted the advantages of opting Civil Engineering as a career. Mr Praveen Joe, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science Engineering delivered a talk on “How to deal with exam anxiety”.

Prof. Carlos Moslares, Dean, School of Business, IQS, University Ramon Llull, Barcelona, Spain visited for a Special Guest Lecture at Hindustan University. His lecture was on Effective Business Management. The students of Business Administration, Hindustan University attended the program. The PowerPoint Presentation prepared by him was simple in language and easy to understand. The presentation and lecture were well appreciated by the students.

The Physics Division of Science and Humanities Department organized a 3 day FDP on “Physics for Civil engineers and Material Science”  to give an insight to the faculty of affiliated colleges into the revised syllabus of Anna University under Regulation 2017 for second semester Civil and Mechanical Students.

The FDP was attended by 14 faculties from various affiliated engineering colleges apart from the KCG staff.

Day 1(10.01.2018)

Inaugural

The FDP started with the Inaugural Session. The Principal Dr.G.Prabhakaran, Vice Principal Dr.SumathiPoobal and HOD, S&H Ms M B Binduattended  the function. The function started with the invocation and lighting of Lamp. HOD, S&H welcomed the gathering . The Principal and Vice Principal expressed their happiness at such a program being organized and stressed the importance of the program. Ms.Linu Sam, the convener gave an insight about the program.

Technical Session 1

This session was taken by Dr.SuganthiDevadosan, Professor in Physics, Hindustan University. She spoke about lighting in Buildings. It was interesting that the talk covered many biological aspects as well when she spoke about eye and luminescence. The talk covered luminescence, radiance and the related laws. It was an excellent beginning.

Technical session 2

In this session Dr Amrutha, Associate Professor, KCG College of Technology spoke about Phase Diagrams. The talk was aimed at giving an overview of the basics of Phase Diagrams to the participants. The session explained to as what phases are and the significance of phase diagram and interpretation of unary phase diagrams.

Day 2 was action packed.

Technical Session 3

In continuation with the previous day’s talk. Dr Amrutha spoke about binary isomorphous phase diagram and microstructure development. An insight was also given into Fick’s Law of Diffusion.

Technical Session 4

Dr JessyRooby  , HOD and Professor, Department of Civil Engineering , Hindustan University gave a talk about Seismology and Seismic Waves. The session was very interesting . She gave an insight into the recalibrated seismic zones and how they are identified apart from covering topics related tectonics, seismic waves etc.

Technical Session 5

In a Seamless follow Dr Pratheeba Paul, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering , Hindustan University spoke about Cyclone and Hazards. There was an added interest in this session given the fact that Tamil Nadu had faced two devastating cyclones in the past one year. The talk took off beautifully starting from the basic terminologies in weather and how cyclones form. It was a spell binding talk.

Technical Session 6

Dr T S Ravikumar, Professor, Department of MechanicalEngineering ,Hindustan University gave a talk on Air conditioning and Cooling systems. This talk was filled with huge information. He briefed the audience about refrigeration techniques and wonderfully connected it to air-conditioning. It was fascinating to see slides and also learn about the different air conditioning techniques.

Technical Session 7

This was an Invited speech by Dr Jawahar, Head, Production Engineering, Velammal College of Engineering. He gave a new dimension to materials when he spoke about Rubber Technology and its mechanical Properties. His widespread knowledge in this field was evident.

Day 3

Technical Session 8

Dr Siddarthan , Associate Professor, Department of Production Technology, Madras Institute of Technology gave an insightful talk into the advanced concepts of Phase Diagrams. He explained about the various laws involved and the microstructure formations and grain boundaries.

Technical Session 9

Dr Vijayalaxmi, Associate Professor, School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University spoke in this session about Thermal Performance of Buildings. This was an extremely interactive session where the speaker interacted with the participants and made a lucid presentation relating to various factors contributing to thermal performance of building. She kept the audience spell bound.

Technical Session 10

Dr Easu, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, KCG College of Technology spoke about Fracture Mechanics and Tensile Strength and gave demonstrations and  explanation regarding concepts like tensile strength and hardness and how materials are tested and designed.

Feed Back Session

The participants gave an excellent feed back about the 3 day program and reiterated that there were lot of take aways from the program. All  of them felt that the  initial apprehension  they had with the syllabus existed no more. There was also a special mention about the excellent hospitality. The participants also made a special request to have a Whatsapp group to discuss the concepts and ideas when needed.

The Program ended with a vote of thanks by the Organising Secretary Dr Amrutha who thanked the Management, Principal , Vice Principal, HOD, S&H, Electrical and House keeping support and the participants in particular for making this an outstanding program

The Business meeting was attended by the Principal, Vice Principal, Head-International Affairs, Heads of the Department of MECH, CIVIL and EIE. In the Business Meeting Prof. Roy suggested that our students could take up one year Master of Science program in UK in various field. The possibility of combined research by staff members was also discussed.

Dr. Rajkumar Roy then addressed the students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at 3 pm at the Seminar hall. During his address Dr. Roy explained the various one year Master of Science programs that students could take in UK. He gave a PowerPoint Presentation about their University which is the only recognized post graduate University in UK.s

Mr. Jasmider Khanna, South Asia Manager International partnership and student recruitment, Cranfield University, UK gave a clear idea about the tuition fee, accommodation and other details for the students who wish to take up higher studies in UK. He also described the entire process of filling up the application form and the admission procedure.

Speaker: A. Alagu Vairamuthu, Asst Manager (Aircraft Technical service Engineer), Jet Airways

This seminar is an ideal platform for whoever wants to pursue in maintenance field. Mr Alagu vairamuthu who is an alumni of M.I.T Chennai, currently working as an aircraft technical service engineer in Jet Airways delivered the lecture. The seminar was attended by third year students of Aeronautical Department along with staffs. HoD Dr. K. Vijayaraja started the seminar by introducing the speaker. Mr. Alagu Vairamuthu started the seminar with his experience in MIT Chennai and how he faced his subjects, which was followed by the basic idea about maintenance required for an aircraft. He listed out the job opportunities based on maintenance and frame repairing. He shared his experience working with top company and the difficulties he faced in solving the problems with the aircraft. He has experience in training the students and workers for the particular aircraft. He shared his photos taken while working in air India and jet airways.

He gave a new idea to the students about the frame repairing work and possible methods of repairing. It was very useful to the students to direct themselves into the right field. Later there was an interaction section between students and the speaker. Various interesting quires were asked by the students and also by staffs. He also gave a brief idea about the higher studies and the sectors were the maintenance-oriented jobs are available. The seminar came to an end by giving a memento to the speaker as a token of love by Dr. Asad Ahmed. R, Asso Professor.
