The one day Faculty Development Program on Counseling Training in Higher Education Abroad organized by Higher Education Cell and Office of International Affairs, commenced at 10.40 am with a prayer. It was followed by welcome speech by Dr. Albert P’Rayan, Head, Higher Education Cell.

Session 1 commenced at 11am. The initial lecture was by Mr. Rajaram of IDP Education. In his lecture he elaborated on the needs and expectations of the students in studying abroad. Some of the points he mentioned include the Subjects and Universities available in the five English speaking countries namely Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Canada and New Zealand. He also gave the details about intakes as well as about the tuition fees. He spoke in detail about the Eligibility and other Criteria.

He started the elaborations with Australia, the dream destination for students. In his lecture he covered all the points including the popular Universities and the courses available in Australia and also about the post study work rights.

The next session was on United Kingdom and it was covered by Ms. Ranjitha Shetty. She talked about the rich culture and heritage of UK referred to as the ancient destination. She touched upon Traditional and Modern University and their entry details. She also discussed the post study Tier system in UK.

Next she took over Canada the most popular destination now a day. She gave hints on the weather conditions prevailing at Canada and also about the various entrance examinations to be cleared before getting admission.

Mr. Rajaram continued the topic regarding admission for higher studies in Universities in New Zealand. He listed out all the requirements for applying to the Universities in New Zealand. He explained in detail about IELTS.

Finally Mr. Rajaram and Ms. RanjithaShetty explained the preparation details pertaining to Statement of Purpose and other salient features in filling up the application form. The morning session came to an end with vote of thanks proposed by

Dr. Parvathy from Hindustan University.

The second session after lunch was conducted by Dr. Shanthi Mohan of US India Education Foundation. She gave a lucid PowerPoint presentation on the following five points regarding admission to post graduate studies in USA:

1. Researching the Options

2. Finance for studies

3. Completing the application

4. Applying for Student Visa

5. Preparation for Departure to US

She elaborated on the Types of US Higher Education, Choosing a university, Scholarship opportunities, TOEFL & GRE and about Statement of Purpose (SOP). She gave full details about the financial assistance available to International Students and the useful websites and resources regarding the same.Dr. Shanthi Mohan then Highlighted the importance of getting proper letters of recommendation. During the lecture she gave tips and guidance for writing effective recommendation letters. Lots of case studies were discussed with ample interaction from participants.

The program came to a close with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Jaya, S&H Department, KCG College of Technology.
